Power and pathos. Bronzes of the Hellenistic world
From March 14 to June 21, 2015, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence
The exhibition (organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the National Gallery of Art in Washington with the collaboration of the superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Tuscany) illustrates, through the exhibition of bronze sculptures, the development of art Hellenistic Age, spreaded from Greece across the Mediterranean between the IV and I b.c
The use of bronze, with its unique characteristics, allowed to reach unprecedented levels of dynamism for the full-length statues and naturalism in portraits, in which the
the psychological expression became a trademark style.
The exhibition brings together findings from the most important archaeological museums internationally: monumental statues of gods, athletes and leaders will be joined to the portraits of powerful characters, along with sculptures of marble and stone, chosen for their mimetic relationship with bronze.
