Trekking in Populonia and Gulf of Baratti

The etruscan city of Populania was one of the most important centers of the ancient world for the processing and trading of iron. Sitting atop a hill surrounded by the sea, this village has a special charm. The medieval walls, built for defense against pirates, and the Stronghold built in the first half of the fifteenth century, enclosing cobbled streets, small stores and a private museum of Etruscan and Roman artifacts, retrieved in that neck of the woods and in the bordering sea.

A road with an outstanding view, connects Populonia to Baratti, where you'll stumble upon substantial evidence of Etruscan times.

A hint to enjoy these breathtaking views in a unique way, it is a walk that counts in the last stretch of Cavalleggeri street from Baratti to Buca delle Fate. The route winds without much struggle, except for the crossing of 2 small gangplanks (around 2 mts) in the forest that covers most of the natural protected area. Panoramic views, cliffs and islands won't be missing.

Along the trail before reaching Buca delle Fate, you will skirt Punta Pianacce, Punta Saltacavallo and Cala Buia.

You'll slope upward towards Recino and reach Populonia where remarkable landscapes spread out all over the place. Along the way you'll bump into oodles of Etruscan remains. From Populonia then slide down towards Baratti, to close the loop with a walk along the beautiful gulf ... and if the weather gives the go-ahead why not indulge in energizing nosedives!
