Trip through Sassicaia wineries
Set among the beautiful hills overlooking the sea of Tuscany, is one of the most renowned wine estates in the world: San Guido estate of Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta. What makes this company so prestigious and famous?
Definitely one reason is the type of soil in which the vines are planted and climate to which they are exposed as extending from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the hills in the back of Castiglioncello di Bolgheri (d.396m asl). The marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta created the first DOC of Italy that comprised one single wine: Sassicaia (1968 for the first time placed on the market).
The history of this wine can be traced back to the immediate postwar when Mario Incisa, living in Bolgheri with his wife Calrice della Gherardesca, planted the first Bordeaux vine cuttings on his land. Nobody before him had ever thought of cultivating "Bordeaux"-wine on Italian soil, even less in a territory that was unknown with respect to viticulture.
